History by group

Your browsing history, grouped by search. Each search with the pages it led to.

Searched for something and opened a few results? By group puts that search and every page you opened from it into one card, newest first. Open them all again in a tab group, or delete the whole search in two clicks.

How it works

  1. Search the web as usual

Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Brave Search, YouTube and dozens more. Nothing to set up.

  2. Open By group

It sits under Recently closed in the sidebar. Each card is one search, with the pages you opened from it.

  3. Reopen or delete it

Open N pages brings the whole search back. Delete N pages clears it from your history after a confirm step.

In detail

How By group works

Groups are worked out on your computer from the history your browser already keeps, including which page you opened from which.

How a search becomes a group

A group starts with a search on a search engine. Every page you open from its results joins it, and so does the same search if you run it again within the hour.

  • Links you open in a new tab from that search, within 5 minutes, join it too.
  • A group needs at least two pages, so a search you never followed up stays out of the way.
  • Search words come from the address, like Google’s q= or YouTube’s search_query=.

Reopen a whole search in a tab group

Open N pages opens every page in the group in background tabs and gathers them into a new tab group, in browsers that support tab groups. Click the search itself to run it again.

  • Each card shows how many pages it holds and when you were last on one.
  • Cards show their first 4 pages. Show N more reveals the rest.
  • Groups load as you scroll, so long histories stay quick.

Delete a search and everything it led to

Delete N pages removes the group’s pages from your browsing history after you confirm. It is the quickest way to clear a gift search or a late-night rabbit hole.

  • Pages you also visited outside the group stay, so nothing else disappears.
  • Protected sites are never deleted, and the count leaves them out.
  • A progress count shows while it works, like Deleting 2 of 3.

What else it does

  • Search every group

Type a word and only the groups whose search, page titles or addresses match stay on screen.

  • Follows your time range

Pick Today, Last 7 days or any range in the sidebar, and the groups come from just that time.

  • Hidden and protected sites

Hidden sites never show up in a group, and protected sites are skipped when you delete one.

FAQ

Questions about history by group

How is this different from Chrome's By group tab?

Chrome groups pages by topic on its own History page. History Monk builds each group from one web search and the pages you opened from it, so every card starts with the words you typed. You can search the groups, reopen one in a tab group or delete one in two clicks.

Why is a search I made missing?

A group needs at least two pages, like the search itself plus one page you opened from it. Check the time range in the sidebar too, since groups only come from that range.

Does deleting a group delete pages I visited at other times?

No. Delete only removes pages whose every visit belongs to that group. Pages you also opened another time stay in your history, and so do protected sites.

Are my searches sent anywhere?

No. Groups are worked out on your computer from your browser's own history. Nothing is uploaded.

The wise search once. History Monk remembers the rest.
