    In detail

    How quick history search works

Three things make it fast and forgiving: it fixes typos using your own history, it ranks results the way you would, and it starts answering before all of your history has loaded.

Search history with typos, and still find it

When an exact search finds fewer than 200 pages, History Monk looks for the closest real word among the words in your own page titles and site names. It adds those pages below the exact matches and tells you what it searched for.

    • Words of 6 letters or fewer can be one letter off. Longer words can be two.
    • Two swapped letters count as one mistake, so reatc finds react.
    • Words under 4 letters, regex searches and Match case are searched exactly as typed.

Sort your browser history by best match, newest or visits

Best scores each page on where your words appear. A word in the title counts for more than one in the address, a whole word beats part of a word, and recent pages get a small lift. Search result pages are ranked a little lower, so the page you actually read comes first.

    • Newest is the default and groups pages under Today, Yesterday and each date.
    • Visits puts the pages you open most at the top, with a count like 42×.
    • Pick the order you like in Settings and History Monk opens with it.

    Built for big histories

History Monk reads your history in growing batches, starting with the newest 2,000 pages, so results show up while older pages are still loading. It keeps up to 100,000 pages in memory and searches all of them with every key you press.

    • Choose 25,000, 50,000 or 100,000 pages to load in Settings.
    • Open on a short range, like Last 7 days? When fewer than 20 pages match, it widens the search for you and says so.
    • A text search shows up to 2,000 results. Add a word to narrow it.

    What else it does

    • Typos fixed for you

When few pages match, History Monk also tries the closest words from your own history. reatc finds React and says so.

    • Ready in 80 ms

Searchable 80 ms after it opens, with up to 100,000 pages loaded and no lag as you type.

    • Exact phrases

Put words in quotes, like "release notes", to find them side by side and in order.

    • Titles and addresses

Every word must appear in the page title or its address, in any order. Capitals and accents are ignored.

    • Best, Newest or Visits

Sort by best match, most recent or most visited. Newest groups pages under Today, Yesterday and each date.

    • Runs on your device

Your browsing history is searched inside the extension. Nothing is sent to a server.

    FAQ

    Questions about quick history search

How do I search my browser history if I misspelled the word?

Just type it. When an exact search finds few pages, History Monk also searches the closest word from your own history, one letter off for short words and two for longer ones, and shows a note like: Also showing results for react.

Does History Monk replace the Chrome history page?

Yes. In Chrome and Edge it takes over the History page, so Ctrl+H, or ⌘Y on a Mac, opens it. In Firefox, open it from the toolbar button or with Alt+Shift+H.

How far back can I search my history?

As far back as your browser keeps it. Chrome and Edge keep about 90 days. History Monk loads up to 100,000 of your most recent pages, and you can lower that in Settings.

The wise search once. History Monk remembers the rest.
