Privacy policy

100% local and private. Your browsing history never leaves your device.

History Monk reads your browsing history through your browser’s own history API and does all of its work inside the extension, on your computer. It has no account, no analytics and no server that holds your history.

The short version

  • Your browsing history is read, searched and analyzed only on your device.
  • History Monk never sends your browsing history, searches, settings or anything about the pages you visit to any server.
  • There is no account, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
  • History Monk makes only two network requests: one to check a license key you enter, and one to look up the current price.
  • History Monk does not sell your data, and does not share it with anyone.

Who this policy covers

This policy covers the History Monk browser extension for Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera and Mozilla Firefox, and this website. “History Monk”, “we” and “us” mean the developer of History Monk.

What History Monk reads

To do its job, History Monk reads data that your browser already keeps. It reads it through the browser’s extension APIs, and only while you use the extension.

DataWhat History Monk does with it
Browsing history: page titles, addresses, last visit times and visit countsShows, searches, sorts, groups, analyzes and exports it, and deletes entries when you ask it to
Visit details: when each visit happened and which page led to itBuilds the By group view, which keeps a search with the pages you opened from it
Recently closed tabs and windows on this deviceShows them in Recently closed, so you can reopen them
Tabs open on your other devices, if browser sync is onShows them in Devices. They come from your browser’s own sync
Site iconsShows them next to each page. In Chrome, Edge and Opera they come from the browser’s own icon cache. In Firefox they come from the browser’s list of your most visited sites

All of this stays on your device. History Monk does not copy your browsing history to a server, and does not save a copy of it anywhere else.

What History Monk stores on your device

History Monk saves a small amount of data in your browser’s storage for the extension. None of it is synced by History Monk.

  • Your settings, such as theme, language, text size, time range, hidden sites and protected sites.
  • Your license key, if you enter one, with a signed record of whether it is valid.
  • Trial and free-use counters, so the 7-day trial and daily free opens work.
  • The last price fetched from the store, kept for up to 3 days.
  • Your language choice, so the right-click menu can match it.

What leaves your device

History Monk makes only these two network requests. Neither one includes your browsing history, your searches or anything about the pages you visit.

  1. License check, to Gumroad. When you enter a license key, History Monk sends the key, the product ID and whether this is the first activation to api.gumroad.com, to check that the key is valid. It checks again in the background every 12 to 20 days while a key is saved, and tries again the next time you open History Monk if a check could not reach Gumroad. Gumroad sells and manages History Monk licenses.
  2. Price lookup, to historymonk.com. When the price is shown to someone without a license, History Monk asks historymonk.com for the current price. This request sends no data from the extension, and the answer is kept for up to 3 days.

Like any web request, these two requests reach the server with standard connection details, such as your IP address. Gumroad and historymonk.com handle those under their own privacy policies.

History Monk has no other network access. Its content security policy only allows connections to the extension itself, api.gumroad.com and historymonk.com, and only allows images from the extension or embedded data.

Things you choose to do

Some actions move data because you asked for it, and only at that moment:

  • Copy puts the addresses, titles or digest you chose on your clipboard.
  • Export creates a CSV, JSON or HTML file in your browser and saves it to your computer.
  • Share in the weekly digest hands the card to your system’s share sheet. Where it goes next is up to you.
  • Opening a page from History Monk loads that page in a tab, like any link.
  • Buying a license happens on historymonk.com and Gumroad, outside the extension, under their terms.

What History Monk never does

  • It never sells or rents your data.
  • It never sends your browsing history, search words, settings or page contents to any server.
  • It never uses your data for advertising, and never shares it with advertisers or data brokers.
  • It never uses your data to decide credit-worthiness or for lending.
  • It never lets a person read your browsing history. There is no copy for anyone to read.
  • It never uses analytics, crash reporting, cookies or tracking pixels.
  • It never runs code that is not shipped inside the extension.

Deleting your data

  • Browsing history. When you delete pages in History Monk, they are removed from your browser’s history. Your browser cannot put a deleted history entry back.
  • History Monk’s own data. Removing the extension deletes everything History Monk stored on your device: settings, license key, trial counters and the cached price.
  • Your license key. Choose Remove next to your key in Settings.
  • Data held by Gumroad. Purchase records are held by Gumroad. Contact Gumroad or the seller through historymonk.com.

This website

This website has no analytics, no advertising and no tracking cookies. Like any website, the service that hosts it receives standard request details, such as your IP address, to deliver the pages.

Chrome Web Store User Data Policy

History Monk only uses your browsing data to provide its single purpose: helping you search, review and clean up your browsing history.

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Changes to this policy

If History Monk ever changes how it handles your data, this page will be updated first, with a new date at the top. A change that sent any of your browsing data off your device would also be shown in the extension and need your consent first, as the Chrome Web Store requires.

Contact

History Monk is made by one independent developer and sold through historymonk.com. For questions about this policy or your data, get in touch through historymonk.com.
